JUDGE'S CV (RESUME)

I retired in 1998 after 30 years farming 5,000 sheep, together with cattle and horses (Welsh, Arabians & Miniatures) on 1,000 acres of river flats in Central Southland, South Island, NZ.  I now live near Invercargill our southernmost city and here I work together with my Mother in the breeding and exhibition of Miniature Horses.

Our Miniature Horse breeding stock comes from a small number of N Z bred horses, a group of imported mares and a senior stallion from the U.S.A.  We currently have 20 Miniatures, and we have enjoyed some success in the show rings in the South Island, NZ especially over the past four or five seasons.

The major highlights would have to be the winning of Hi Point Horse of the Year in the 1998/99 season.  This was won by a NZ bred Stallion, and our junior stallion was Runner Up Horse of the Year.  We exhibited Hi Point Mare Cat A, and won the Gelding Incentive Cat B.  The 1999/2000 year we were thrilled to win the Supreme Best Presented award at the Canterbury Horse and Pony All Breeds Show.  Never before has a Miniature Horse won this coveted award, and on this occasion we were in a field of horses representing 15 different breeds.   Similarly again in the 2000/2001 season – same horse, same award, different Judge.

I completed my NZMHA Judging Qualification in 1998 under the direction of Wayne Hipsley, U.S.A.

I also have worked as Judge and Steward at various horse shows in the Southland area, and have judged a variety of breeds and classes, including Thoroughbreds, Arabians, Hunters, Saddle Hacks, Riding and Lead Rein Ponies, Side Saddle, Turnout and Presentation, in hand and under saddle.  I enjoy very much to work with people who enjoy horses as I do – and for whom the pursuit of excellence in their field of endeavour is not a chore but a pleasure.

I have not judged Miniatures very much in the South Island because I exhibit so widely there, tho in the ring as Exhibitors we are continually “judging” – not only the other horses in our class but also the work of the appointed Judge on the day.  My team of horses to exhibit has grown from a few, to a group of 14 at the latest NZ Royal Show in Invercargill. I understand the work involved in producing a team in all areas of competition, not only in halter classes but also in Showmanship, Jumping and Harness classes.  I love to show horses.

I have been accepting Judging appointments now for a few years – first Miniature Horse show in the North Island of NZ at the Taranaki area’s Youngstock Show early 2000.  There were up to 20 youngsters in classes – it was a great show.  The horses were nicely presented, and the people were friendly and competed with a spirit of good will and good sportsmanship.  It has been said that as an Exhibitor I am ‘serious’ but as a Judge I am ‘quite kind’.  I know what it takes to prepare and show horses.

When asked how I deal with the situation of someone I know exhibiting when I am the Judge I respond,  “If God Himself were to come into the ring with His horse I would place it where I believed it should be placed based on its merits”
